Derived from the basse-danse, the "Paduana" (or Pavane) was a stately court dance. The "Gagliarda" was a dance in 3/4 time that was a variation of the material used in the "Paduana". In this edition, note values have been halved or quartered - the tempi and markings are suggestions only, and the tempo can be increased to add excitement to the piece.
